Chelsea School

A new two-level teaching block has transformed the eastern edge of the Chelsea School site, replacing the outdated single-level structure. Designed with flexibility and modern learning environment in mind, the building houses the equivalent of six teaching spaces - three on each level - along with thoughtfully designed staff and student facilities.

The teaching spaces embrace diverse learning scenarios, featuring a mix of spacious open areas and smaller breakout zones for group activities. A two-level veranda overlooks the existing courtyard, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces with a timber deck and seating areas. This inviting frontage comes alive with two access staircases leading to the upper level, creating a dynamic connection to the surrounding environment.

The eastern facade offers sweeping views of the Northshore and Harbour, stretching toward the city skyline. Strategically placed windows cater for both students and adults, allowing natural light to flood the spaces while framing the breathtaking scenery. On the western side, sliding windows and doors open onto covered deck areas, enhancing outdoor learning opportunities and fostering connectivity across the wider site. The lower deck steps double as casual seating for students during breaks, adding functionality to the design.

Sustainability is at the core of this project. The building’s orientation minimizes reliance on mechanical ventilation by optimizing cross-ventilation through carefully placed windows on the east and west facades. High-level clerestory windows further improve airflow, reducing heating and ventilation demands.

Clad in durable Equitone panels and topped with a profiled metal roof, the structure is designed to withstand the elements of its elevated and exposed location, ensuring longevity and low maintenance.

This teaching block isn’t just a building - it’s a forward-thinking space that inspires learning, encourages collaboration, and harmonizes with its natural surroundings
