New House in a Heritage Area

House in Remuera

The house is located on a rear site in Remuera which slopes towards the northeast aspect of the site. There are views towards the north which Rangitoto Island in the distance and Hobson Bay in the foreground. 

The house comprises of an informal living and dining area connected by sliding walls with a generous kitchen positioned to take advantage of the northerly aspect and views towards Rangitoto. The ground floor area also contains a formal living room, study together with ancillary guest WC and laundry facilities. Plus, garaging for four cars. 

A lower living level contains a generous sized recreation room, cellar, sauna and change facilities together with a fifth bedroom and ensuite. This lower level opens onto a terrace and pool area.

The four bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms are located on the upper floor with screened terraces off all the bedroom suites. A void above the entry area connects the two levels as well as the gracious stair with gallery access to the bedrooms. The main bedroom suite comprises of a large bedroom, walk in wardrobe and ensuite and enjoys views towards Rangitoto to the north.

The house is constructed with concrete block walls and concrete floor slabs with brick cladding to the lower level walls and a timber batten rainscreen to the upper levels. The exterior refences the existing dwelling non the site as well as aligning with the heritage overlay in Remuera. The interior finishes are steel trowelled plaster on concrete block, painted gib and tiles to the bathroom walls. The floor finishes are French oak to the entry and circulation areas, living areas and stair with carpet elsewhere in the bedrooms. All the bathroom floors are tiled.

The house encapsulates the idea of a large house that meets the clients brief and fits in the context of Remuera and the heritage overlay in a modern and contemporary manner.
