Viaduct Point Apartments occupies a key site fronting Pakenham Street and Customs Street West. The design provides for 78 apartments with a variety of sizes and types over five levels ranging from studio apartments to two-bedroom duplex, respecting and developing the design outcome against the Auckland City Council's planning and environment guidelines.
The project completes and complements the earlier development of The Point Apartments to create a strong and well-defined urban block that addresses all street frontages and creates an inner courtyard between the two developments. The ground floor at Customs Street West has a cafe and a convenience store as well as other commercial activities. The main pedestrian entry is at the corner of the site to address the intersection with a five storey high atrium containing the lift core and common stairs as well as provide glimpse views into the courtyard beyond.
The structure and construction of the building is a simple steel frame to expediate construction timelines with a mix of infill panels for window and door openings to the apartments and slid end walls of the development. Timber decks are simple clip on steel structures fixed to the outside of the steel frame. Carparking is located in a semi basement accessed of the shared driveway with The Point apartments.
A bronze sculpture by Paul Dibble provides a public artwork to the entry forecourt and the 5 storey atrium and complements the sculptures in The Point Apartments.
